A Restorative School: The Transformation Process Using Student Voice
Thursday October 10, 2024 8:30am - 9:30am PDT
When we look at school transformation, we must incorporate all aspects including teacher skill and buy-in, family partnership, and overall policy work. And all of these parts of the process must incorporate student voice. By beginning with education, voice, and buy-in for staff, students, and families, we lay the groundwork for a school where restorative practices can thrive. This work is ongoing, especially the layers of staff skill-building. The policies must join this transformation process, leading just a hair ahead of where the buy-in lies, creating a behavior matrix and policies that are in line with restorative values, utilizing the voice of all stakeholders. And students must be invested in and nurtured in playing a pivotal role in the implementation of restorative practices through the development of a Peer Restorative Justice Program. This workshop will walk participants through this process, providing key resources to walk away with.

Key Takeaways
1. Transforming a school to restorative practices must involve an education, buy-in, and true sense of agency. 2. Peer Restorative Justice programs are a key element of empowering students to take the lead in this work. 3. All policies must be examined and shifted through the lens that reflects restorative values.

Self-Attuning- Tending to Emotional Activation: Healing our Own Wounds while Providing Care to Others
Thursday October 10, 2024 8:30am - 9:30am PDT
This workshop offers school-based or connected service providers engagement in reflective inquiry around how the experiences we’ve lived through impact and inform our ability to provide responsive mental health services for others. We examine the ways in which we might alchemize harmful accounts into emotionally corrective experiences for ourselves and our communities, promote our relational interdependence and cultivate the conditions within our school communities that allows us to be human AND boundaried.

The workshop is founded upon three essential questions: How might we might use our lived experience to positively inform the ways we lead through and amidst crisis? How might we increase self-awareness and inquiry into the therapeutic dynamics and situations that activate us? How might we be able to support our own emotional needs and healing to better support the therapeutic needs of our colleagues and the young people we serve?

-Create a brave, generative, and regulating space for educators to explore the interconnection between lived experience and their current ability to uphold trauma informed engagement.
-Engage in community valued, trauma informed regulation strategies that positively impact the process of recovery and renewal.
-Imagine new ways of incorporating recovery and renewal activities into therapeutic intervention, classrooms and curriculum, peer and student interactions, meeting structures and personal lives.
-Identify individual and collective protective factors, community assets and stressors, significant loss, trauma and opportunities for growth

Behind the Scenes: Exploring Self-Care Through the Lens of Mental Health Heroes, A Phenomenological Approach
Thursday October 10, 2024 12:30pm - 1:30pm PDT
The work of a mental health professional can be very rewarding, however there are inherent risks involved in this profession that can impact the emotional and physical wellbeing of the provider. In general, mental health providers have a tendency to neglect their own self-care and continue to provide services to clients in an impaired or distressed state and can ultimately lead to experiencing occupational hazards. This workshop will explore a phenomenological study on self-care from the lens of community mental health providers. Participants will be able to:
1. Gain awareness on the impact of the workplace on the self of the provider
2. Identify occupational hazards and recognize the symptoms
3. Understand how attitudes and feelings about self-care impact one’s ability to practice it
4. Empower school mental health providers and educators to align their values with actions and regularly engage in self-care practices

The Neurobiology of Restorative Practices -The Science Of Relationships
Thursday October 10, 2024 12:30pm - 1:30pm PDT
Recent advancements in brain research are increasingly emphasizing the significance of relationship building and the role of right-brain epigenetic social experiences as the catalyst for optimal learning and social-emotional adjustment. For educators and administrators, it becomes crucial to delve into and comprehend how compromised right-brain locomotion can impede a student's ability to develop empathy and navigate emotional and cognitive complexities effectively. This presentation aims to highlight the importance of adopting a right-brain restorative framework, particularly when working with young individuals who have been impacted by COVID-19 and its aftermath, as they return from quarantine. Current mental health statistics reveal a prevailing prevalence of high levels of trauma, often leading to PTSD, and adjustment symptoms, among students within the K-12 system.
