Today's Foster Youth: How to Create a Comprehensive Foster Youth Support Program on Your Campus

Foster youth are often the “invisible” underserved population. Participants will learn how to create a comprehensive academic and social/emotional program serving the needs of today’s foster youth. The presentation will include academic supports, on-campus programs, mentorships, district and community outreach, career readiness, resources, and how to build meaningful relationships for this at-risk population. Financial limitations and options, and how to continue growing the program will also be discussed.

Body dissatisfaction is a significant risk factor for mental health issues such as eating disorders and depression. Our presentation introduces BodyKind, a high school body image curriculum that in recent trials was found to increase students’ body appreciation. Participants will recognize how their own values and attitudes regarding body image and eating habits can influence students. They will also learn to teach self-care behaviors related to food, body, and eating.

We will address the opportunity to transform young adult mental health by applying the principles of personalized medicine. An ideal personalized mental health ecosystem is twofold: 1) empowering individuals with their own data by measuring behavioral biomarkers that show changes in mental well being and 2) tailored resources and action plans that engage our diverse identities.
