Trauma Informed Skills for Educator (TISE) Online Asynchronous Training Pilot: An Effectiveness Study of an Innovative Trauma-Focused Professional Development Training for Educators

Workshop Objectives - Participants will:
1. Learn about an innovative online asynchronous trauma focused professional development training for educators
2. Understand the different modules that comprise the TISE training including brain-based trauma knowledge, it’s impacts on students in the classroom, and trauma-responsive skills to increase educator capacity to support students
3. Know about the effectiveness of the TISE training and how other educators experienced the self-paced professional development

Description:
The Trauma-Informed Skills for Educators (TISE) is an online asynchronous professional development designed to enhance educators’ knowledge about trauma and build trauma-responsive skills. Part 1 will demonstrate the modules used in the training and part 2 have trainees experience a skill building module and practice activity. The last part of the presentation will share the outcome of the pilot study and implications.

The presentation will showcase Kern County Office of Education Alternative Education’s partnership with the Center for Safe and Resilient Schools and Workplaces as they engage in and organizational trauma-informed transformation. Part 1 will focus on highlighting the MTSS aligned multi-tiered and multidisciplinary intervention and professional development training used to support a whole school trauma-informed capacity building. Part 2 will outline Kern’s ongoing multi-tiered and multi-year plan for sustainable organizational change to support student safety and success.

This presentation aims to amplify Black American elementary student voice in a post-2020 world. This presentation will review concepts related to student (youth) voice, youth participatory action research (YPAR), and research conducted with 4th and 5th grade Black American students. Participants will learn the basics to creating their own student voice circles (sacred spaces) and will develop awareness on how to be co-constructors of knowledge in regard to YPAR work.

Toolbox Project: Discovery of the Missing Piece in Education

Participants will explore how to support student resilience by teaching concrete skills (12 Tool Practices) and learn how to create a safe and caring environment where these tools can thrive. This course will demonstrate how to use an inquiry-based approach, fostering self-reflection and agency among students. Participants will learn how these tools align with CASEL’s SEL competencies by gaining practical strategies which enhance healthy student and community  resilience.
